Hispanic Heritage Month

Honoring Hispanic History, Culture, and Contributions

Each year, from September 15 to October 15, the United States observes National Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the rich histories, vibrant cultures, and invaluable contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. This month-long observance is a powerful opportunity to recognize the profound impact of Hispanic and Latinx communities on our nation's past, present, and future.

History of Hispanic Heritage Month

The observance began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson. Recognizing the growing importance of the Hispanic community, President Ronald Reagan expanded the observance in 1988 to a 30-day period, spanning from September 15 to October 15. This expansion was officially enacted into law on August 17, 1988, with the approval of Public Law 100-402.

Significance of the Dates

The timing of Hispanic Heritage Month is particularly significant. September 15 marks the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Shortly after, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence on September 16 and 18, respectively. Additionally, Columbus Day, also known as Día de la Raza (Day of the Race), which falls on October 12, is included within this 30-day period, further highlighting the historical connections between Spain and the Americas.
